It is true what they say about ignorance being bliss, if you don’t realize something it don’t bother you. Imagine my discomfort as I ask myself this question, how much money has all the Congressmen and Senators not to mention presidential wannabes raised in the last decade?
Being conservative let’s say only two candidates per party ran for each seat. In the senate alone only using Republican and Democratic parties that would come to 4 per seat X 100 seats =400 candidates at let’s say they spend 5 million apiece. So that comes to 2,000,000,000. (You won’t make that much in three lifetimes)
There are currently 435 fixed seats in the House of Representatives at 4 running per seat = 740 contenders at let’s say only spending 2 million each = 3,480,000,000.
So now we have 5.4 Billion dollars the bulk of which goes to the media. Now ask yourself, what as taxpayers do we get in return?
I don’t know the answer to this question, do you? What about, when was the last time an elected official solved a problem instead of just addressing it? What level of job performance do we hold these people to that we elect? Should we consider a performance = time in service or pay equation? If we did we would have to replace everyone! What if we gave all our elected officials two years to balance the budget or lose their job period? Five years to solve the Social Security debacle, or face jail time for deliberately misleading the American people by claiming they could do the job.
And just what to our benefit has the media done with all that money? Dump doom and gloom blood and guts into our home every night. If some young starlet flashes her hooch while getting out of a car, we will see that reported every night for over a week by every television network and newspaper. But I will tell you that when a girl’s softball team carried the opposing player who had twisted her ankle around the bases and allowed her team to win, It was only covered by one station one time.
So what do we do? Continue to focus on our own lives and try to ignore that over which we feel we have no influence or input? Just think in the time it took you to read this you could have penned a email to your congressman and demanded they balance the budget, control oil prices, regulate drug costs, institute work programs to empower those without jobs, and demand full disclosure of all fiduciary spending in the future. Or we can call for a new election!
In other words my friend; the same thing you are asked to do at your place of employment, do your damn job or hit the road!
