The Follies of Youth

1914 Columbus Grove High School     I have noticed that kids today seem to have a lot more on their plate than we would ever have imagined.  When I was in school back in what seemed the Stone Age, the late 60’s and 70’s.  Most of us were all about being “cool man”, we wanted equality for everyone, just to be able to “do your own thing” and other great philosophical ideals.  Some of these ideas turned out pretty good, others not so much.

But I think we have gone wrong in our zeal to raise the perfect kid, we try to control too much and leave them very little with our zero tolerance policies.

I remember at least once a week my three closest friends and I would be summoned to the principal’s office and interrogated concerning some prank that had occurred on campus that week.  Most of the time we were responsible for the chaos, however nothing could ever be proved and so we became legends of a sort never to be caught.

But in our defense some things just begged for our unique brand of attention.  Let’s be honest you cannot be a teacher in a High School with a license plate that reads Beaver Falls.  Especially when it is on a VW bug and you leave it unlocked.

Somehow during lunch period, without anybody in the entire school noticing, the VW managed to be rolled behind the school near the Vocational Agriculture building, lifted off the ground by the roof mounted crane used for working on tractors, all four wheels removed, placed inside the car and then placed on the roof. And to take it to the next level, not wanting to be average pranksters, the electric motor was removed from the crane and hidden.

Sure enough my friends and I were once again summoned to the office.  And once again we were at a complete loss as to what they were talking about.  This event brought priceless entertainment to so many for so long, to this day smiles still linger at the mere thought.

My point, should this happen today the kids involved would be relentless hunted down, sent to jail, expelled, fined and then sent to an alternative High School marring them for life. The parents and siblings would be forced to move away and try to start life over where no one knew of the horrific events of their past.

Perhaps we should in the words of the great sage’s of our youth, Chill out man!

From somewhere on the back roads,

The Demonmaster
