That’s right, Blessing, as in Blessing, Texas a wide spot in the road north of Palacios, Texas and west of Bay City Texas. This little town has a rather colorful beginning as Jonathan E. Pierce, little brother of Able H “Shanghai” Pierce, set aside some 640 acres of land where the Southern Pacific and the New York Central (Missouri Pacific) Railroads intersected.
Pierce was so happy about having not one but two railroads crossing his land he wanted to name the town Thank God! The Post Office officials thought that perhaps he could find something a little more appropriate, so they sett
led on Blessing and opened a Post office in 1902.
Then in 1906 Jonathan and his son Able B. built the Blessing Hotel to accommodate land seekers and a place for the family. In 1969 a young lady by the name of Helen Rose
who soon became Helen Feldhousen started working at the hotel in the kitchen and in 1977 became the proprietor.
And you will find her still there today rustling up some of the best grub that ever passed your lips. So grab a plate and get all yo
u want and go back for as much as you like, don’t forget the big glass of iced tea.
This is one of those places that seem frozen in time and you owe it to yourself to experience places like this before their gone forever.
There are several old buildings around town I wish I had
time to take some more pictures but a storm cloud is rolling in and I’m on the scooter so I had better get!
One last thing there is an old oak tree here in town that dates back to the early 1800’s and is a sight to behold. I didn’t take a picture of it because some things in life just must be seen in person to do them justice. I hope you get bye Blessing someday, stop in and tell Helen the Demonmaster sent ya!
From somewhere on the backroads,
The Demonmaster
Not much more can be said. You are right on the money about Blessing. we try and get out there at least once a year.
