On Sunday May 25 Krusty and Sideshow, aka Harold and Katrina; two very close friends of Dolores and I, invited me to join them on a ride with Houston’s Star Riders Motorcycle Club. And as I am leaving on June 1 to start my long trip, I look forward to getting as much butt time in as possible in preparation of the big ride.
The plan was to ride over to The Purple Possum Winery near Navasota, Texas and taste their Meads. They specialize in Honey based Meads, a tradition that dates back over 9000 years. I really like the Cranberry flavored Mead, it is crisp and tart and very refreshing, and come to find out; one of their most popular varieties. You might wonder about the name, yep, I did too!
On the edge of their property they have small arbor of Purple Muscadine grapes. One year they picked and crushed a bucket full and were sidetracked by perhaps some food like deviled eggs wait
ing just inside the house begging to be devoured. As time passed they forgot all about the grapes in the bucket until they heard the crashing sound coming from the back porch. There, lying in the middle of a pile of crushed grapes and covered with purple juice was a small furry possum doing what it does best, playing possum. Now you must know that grape juice will stain anything that comes in contact with it to a most wonderful and long lasting purple. For a long time after, they would see their little purple friend and when it came time to name the winery, what else would do? Check ‘em out at purplepossumwinery.com.
Next
stop was Yankees Tavern just up the road in Carlos, Texas. Here we stopped for a bite to eat and get a chance to see some bikes as Yankees is a favorite stop for
many bikers. We always try to work in a stop here at Yankees anytime we come up this way. I have always had a great time, the food is good and the beer is always ice cold and people very friendly. Check ‘em out at yankeestavern.com
Last st
op is a tad more upscale, The Bernhardt Winery located near Plantersville, Texas. Here you will find those folks that know all about thinks like “nose, bouquet, flavors and finish” And they are more than willing to t
each ya’ll whatever you wish to learn. They have live music every Sunday May through October and should you wish to have a private functio
n they can arrange that as well. I found this small family owned winery to be very welcoming and not in the least pretentious. Currently they produce around 3,000 gallons of wine a year and are planning an expansion that will take them up to around 10,000 gallons. And I think they may have been a bit surprised at the number of bottles of wine bikers buy! All in all we had a very good time, and I recommend a bottle of Crimson. So I think I’m just going to go put my feet up awhile and rest my weary bones.
