Media’s De-evolution of the News

As I was reviewing the top stories of the day online at the national AP top ten, there among the stories of bombing in Iraq, Pittsburg surpassing Los Angeles as country’s sootiest city, and leader of al-Qaida in Somalia reportedly dies in airstrike, there was the story of all stories, ‘American Idol’ boots another finalist; 4 singers remain.

I sat in total disbelief as read the report by

·         NEW YORK (AP) — Diamond wasn’t Brooke White’s best friend on “American Idol” Wednesday night. The tearful 24-year-old folkster from Mesa, Ariz., was eliminated as the Fox show trimmed the competition to the top four finalists.

·         Earlier in the live telecast, Ryan Seacrest defended Paula Abdul against Internet chatter about her flub the night before: “Just for the record: The rumors – they’re not true. She’s part of our family, and we love her.”

·         “American Idol” had switched up the format by making judges take notes and hold their appraisals until every contestant had performed. Abdul said later that she was thrown for a loop when producers apprised the judges of the change at the last minute.

The article was much longer, out of kindness I just picked three highlights. At what point in our evolution from the apes have we decided that a television talent show deserves coverage by the AP. I think it should be covered by entertainment news broadcasts and in print possibility in the entertainment section, but at what time and under whose watch was the decision made that this information merits top national news coverage? Is there a shortage of real news that we now need filler articles from the AP? Has their standards slid so much that they employ writers like Carlson who by the way also cover Brittney Spears and other nationally important figures?

Can you Imagine Walter Cronkite, or Huntley-Brinkley reporting on the current winner of What’s Your Line.

Are we as a society regressed to a 5th grade level? (No offense to 5th graders) after all there is also a show; Smarter than a 5th Grader, and we find that most of us aren’t. Well I could go on and on but I see it’s time for Big Brother, Gotta run!

Did you miss the story about the four year old dying of suffocation in the sandbox? That made it to the front page of our three days a week local paper. I needed to know this to make my day a little sadder.
How about a good news daily? Huh?
As a life long teacher of young children I was partially paralyzed with empathy for the teacher on watch.
