I would like to ask that before you call the men in white coats to come gather me up for observation, please read this post to the end. A very close friend was over the other night to see how I am holding up as the Memorial for my Beloved is this Saturday. We were sitting in the living room and I told her that I was doing as well as excepted and was rather surprised that in fact I was doing this well. I commented that I was still waiting for a sign or message of some kind that she was indeed ok on the other side, because she promised me that if it were at all possible she would send me some form of reassurance.
We talked about many things; the fact that she felt so bad for not being able to attend the Memorial Service because of work related issues, which I assured her was just fine as she was at Dolores’ side several times in the last weeks of her life; holding her hand and telling her just how much she was loved and would be missed and that I would be looked after and not to worry.
Time passed and she needed to get going and I walked her to her truck and as we stood in the driveway we were both overwhelmed with the scent of Camellias. Now I can assure you there are no Camellias in bloom with 5 miles of my house and maybe none in the entire state of Texas this time of year. However we could still smell it, it was as if someone broke a jar of air freshener at our feet.
As I offered one plausible cause after another, my long suffering friend finally said, “Here’s your sign”. Thinking she was making a reference to Bill Engvall’s catch phrase; I continued with one rational possibility after another. She finally said, “I now see why you said that Dolores would need to send you more than one sign”.
As we stood there and things slowly started to dawn on me, and my feeble mind clicked into gear. My mouth fell open and the tears began to flow, how dense must I be, My Wife’s favorite flower is and was the Camellia.
So now I must believe either I have rounded the bend as the old timers use to say, or my Beloved sent me a sign that all is well with her. But you know my friend is right, I still need a few more to be sure. Please Honey?
