Day 26

To be honest this is day 25.5 & 26 but I didn’t wish to confuse you. After I sprinkled Dolores’ ashes in the river I went to Donna’s house in nearby Cortez, Colorado. Here I met a woman torn between the ideology of being a dyed in the wool lifelong hippy and the mother of a young Marine serving in Afghanistan. A dilemma, which she seems to have resolved remarkably well, considering her core beliefs of peaceful resolution. Getting the support of being an active Blue Star Mom, she is able to keep her peaceful ideals while still standing by, and for her Son and all the rest of our Military Men and Women serving our country.

While visiting her she took me to a friend’s house that has been built in a most interesting manner in keeping with what one might expect in striving to work with the land instead of against it. Here are pictures of the 800 sq. ft. domicile that seems a lot larger than you would expect. The walls are straw and mud coated with lime and is a most cozy yet livable space. The walls are two feet thick and are comfortably heated in the cold Colorado winters with just the wood stove, and cool in the summer because of its natural insulating properties. I think this is a most wonderful use of natural renewable materials and smart engineering. Bravo!

Next, off across New Mexico and toward home.

From somewhere on the backroads,

The Demonmaster
